Milan – just wonderful! So much history here and we saw a lot but I’m short on time and internet minutes so will post some links to save time – Milan history.
We started our walking tour at the Storza Castle – built in the 15th Century by the Duke of Milan.
The courtyard was huge. The section in front was where the his family lived and it had an escape tunnel that went through to the monastery in case of attack.
After a quick look at the castle and the city walls – a lot left standing in Milan.. we started our walking tour. Milan – fashion capital of the world – this wonderful statue is a tribute to the cities history of fashion – its is a needle and thread, with the knotted end on the left and the needle on the right.
Near the needle part there is also a red shoe and silver globe.
Lots of these little cars around.
These old wooden trams date back to the 1950s.
… we walked a few blocks to Santa Maria del Grazia where we saw…
The Last Supper!
The room was quite small and plain apart from both ends which had the paintings. It actually not inside the church but in a room next to the church – quite plain and small. There were two guards in the room that were just ready to pounce if you made any noise at all. Tony got in trouble trying to take a 360 photo here, he was not convinced that it had no flash or no video so this snap has to do.
Then we had a short visit to the church.. it was beautifully decorated
… if you wanted the lights on for a photo you had to pay at each little alcove…
Then a few more blocks walk and into the fashion area – it is just fantastic!! much better than these few pics show…
The marble tiled floors were wonderful…
… and just when you think you can’t be surprised by a church anymore you walk outside to see this…
… all white marble.. the largest church in Italy, the 5th largest church in the world.. The Milan Cathedral took six centuries to build – its is just breathtaking!
We had originally been going to go inside but the day we visited was a holy day for Marys birthday – 8th September – so our tour had not been able to get tickets – the queue to buy tickets was 20 – 3o minutes – the queue to get in once you had a ticket was 90 minutes. Didn’t want to stand two hours or more in the hot afternoon sun so we skipped going inside and went walking instead – Milan is certainly where all the beautiful people live!
The countryside was lovely, little villages everywhere in the hills, nice and green – very picturesque.
