We made our way to the oldest part of the city, the Gothic quarter, which was originally built by the Romans. Its just an amazing place to walk about and so much of the old buildings remain. The streets are narrow and there are lots of little forums and places to gather. The streets are cobblestone.
More information on the Gothic quarter here ( running out of time!)
This ‘mailbox’ was outside the entrance to a private roman garden off the side of the cathedral
Inside it was lovely and cool on the bottom floor.
This very old date tree grows up through the open ceiling of the garden. In the background you can see the spire of the cathedral and later we will be going up to see it close up.
We made our way to the cathedral and passed the clothing check… just… there were people in front of us who were not allowed in as knees and shoulders were showing…
This cathedral is just incredible and well worth looking up online to see how beautiful it is inside – see more here.
I’m just going to post a few pics of an amazing afternoon.
Inside the church
All around the church are the pavers where people are buried marked with different symbols.
we made our way up to the roof of the cathedral – 3 flights in a lift and lots of construction work happening
We had views all over Barcelona.
The spire of the cathedral
running out of time, need to leave to board the ship, so just a few more from the inside
well its time to go, Barcelona has been an incredible start to our holiday. So much more to see and I’d certainly come back here again. I expect there’ll be a lot more amazing sites to write about and I’ll post as often as I can, just depends on the internet access .
Off to board the Royal Princess…
