A fantastic day in Heraklion Greece! We visited the ancient ruins of Knossos Palace – the first palace was built in 1900 BC – not a lot of it left – the second palace – 1600 BC. Here’s a few pics…
Sailing into Crete in the morning…
After a bus trip through the city we came to site of The Palace of Knossos – its a big site – the palace had over 150 rooms. The hills are dry and planted with olive trees. This is the courtyard area.
… wonderful views out to the hills…
Old pots that have been restored.
The bulls horns are the main symbol here as that is the legend of Athens ( Theseus & the Minoator) so there were bulls horns decorating the original palace like these ones below.
we spent a few hours walking around the ruins with our guide
This is the oldest throne in Europe – the throne of the Minoan King.
The room where the king did business.
Olive trees everywhere on those hills.
The Minoans also had a working sewage system and methods for transferring water – sorry Emily – the Romans weren’t the first 🙂
Reconstructed section with the colours that would have been used.
The Royal Road that is the entrance to the theatre.
After a great morning at the Palace we went into Crete and spent a few hours there. We headed down to the beautiful port area… yes, it really is this beautiful…
These fishermen had netfuls of sea sponges they were unloading.
A short walk back into the town area and a visit to another orthodox church..
… time to go back the ship after another wonderful day in Greece.
