We were up early to see the sun come up as we sailed in to Ketchikan – the Salmon Capital of the world, first stop in Alaska.
On the opposite side to the port & town there were houses along the shoreline. All the houses are built of timber and then clad. Some were fallen down and quite ruined.
We docked at the port at 6am.
So we were off and ready to explore by 6.30, a bit cool but not too cold. We went for a walk around the local shopping area where some shops were already open ready for the tourists.
Our ship – Norwegian Jewel. Over the day two more ships came in and docked alongside.
Not far from the shops is an area called Creek St. This was the red light district when the town was first settled and its now been turned into lots of little shops with the exception of ‘Dollys House’ – which we’ll come back to later.
Its really lovely, set on the creek, lots of little wooden houses restored.
This is the view from the bridge over the creek as you enter. There were loads of seagulls, we saw five seals here happily lazing about on the river, catching fish to eat; lots of dead and live fish and a few happy cats eating the bits of the fish the seals leave.
This is just one of the seals here- we could hear a loud ‘slap’ noise when he’d catch a fish as the he’d roll around under water with it before eating them.
It turned into a lovely sunny day eventually when it came out from behind the clouds. After Creek St we walked back around the port to see a bit more of the town.
There are several fur and taxidermy shops here. I found some beautiful fur coats on sale – The one I liked was 50% off making it $3,800 so no fur coat for me!
After a good look around we went back on board for breakfast about 9am, then back out to meet up for trip to the rainforest walk, salmon hatchery and raptor centre.
