We arrived at Juneau at lunchtime. Juneau is the capital of Alaska. It can only be reached by boat or plane as there is no roads out. There are about 50kms of roads in Juneau and at the time the local highway was built it was the most expensive highway built in the US. The areas has a lot of old goldmines.
The sun was shining, the weather was perfect! We caught a local bus out to Mendenhall Glacier and spent a few hours out there walking about. I have to say its one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. The forests, the lakes – pine trees and birches everywhere. We saw quite a few red squirrels, they are really small and move so fast -impossible to get a photo of them.
On the bus we warned about bears and not to run if we see one.
We caught the bus back into town and took a quick trip up to the top of the Mt Roberts which overlooks the town.
Thats our ship down there and another one just leaving.
We left port late in the evening, the sun goes down after 8 pm here at the moment.
Overall a great day spent outside, lots of walking and fantastic weather – no rain yet which everyone tells us is unusual for this time of year.
