Today we had a lovely relaxing day on Mystery Island. The island is only 1.5kms big and is uninhabited. There I am relaxing under a little umbrella made of palm trees.
In WWII the island was used a landing strip for the allied forces. The centre of the island is just a cleared, grassed area that runs the length of the island. They unloaded supplies here and then moved them by boat to the larger islands.
In1974 Elizabeth II made an unscheduled stop here for a family picnic as she sailed to Australia on Britannia. I can understand why, its really lovely. So peaceful!
When the cruise ships visit the locals all come and set up stalls and the tourists spread out to snorkel, sunbake and enjoy a little bit of tropical paradise. The water here was so clear, you can easily see the coral and fish swimming about. A snorkelling trip out in a boat here would be amazing.
We spent most of the morning lazing about. I had trouble walking in a straight line and was stumbling about like a drunken sailor – apparently I did not have my ‘land legs’ at all – it was pretty funny- I felt like the island kept moving underneath me as we explored a few little walking tracks.
Today just felt like we’d stepped back into the ‘South Pacific’ movie – it really is a beautiful place. We went back to the ship mid afternoon for a late lunch and generally just had a nice, relaxing day in the sun. Heres a pic of the ship from the island.
