Scenic Cruising Shiretako Peninsula

Jayne, 30/09/2014

Tuesday 30/09/14 Today we cruised slowly along a lovely UNESCO world heritage area along the Shiretake Peninsula. We spent the day watching lovely volcanic islands go by and in the afternoon there was a commentary about the area. It’s also known as a place for whales at this time of year and just as I went back to get a warm coat from my cabin the announcement was made that a whale had been seen. Of course by the time we got back on deck it was gone and no more were spotted. There were quite a few porpoises in the area most of the afternoon. It was a nice relaxing day but the temperature has really dropped as we get higher up.

So I guess we have a couple of sea days sneaking in behind the path of the typhoon ahead of us. The weather here is very overcast and raining lightly. Over 1600 passengers have left the ship in the last 48 hours so it’s very quiet on board – easy to get an elevator and easy to get a window seat! 🙂 The last of the passengers leaving are just disembarking now. The crew are securing everything around the ship and we’ve been told to put everything that could move away in a drawer or on the floor as it is expected that we will hit some rough seas this afternoon and evening. I have to say that Princess have handled it all very well from our perspective. We get regular announcements and there is a channel onboard where we can see the progress of the typhoon, the planned path of the ship, the predicted wave heights- the pictures from NASA are pretty impressive. So it’s all very interesting to watch. So all is good here – we’ve taken up our corner spot in the coffee shop for the morning and if the internet holds out I’ll catch up on some blog posts today as well. 169 2014-10-05 22:56:30 2014-10-05 22:56:30 open open typhoon-update-monday-morning publish 0 0 post 0 Cruising Diamond Princess _edit_last 1
